Secret Destination Holidays: What is the appeal?

6/3/2023 8:17:00 AM by The Big Surprise

It’s often the moments that you didn’t plan for, or expect that make the best memories.

It’s not all dingy budget hotels and low-cost airlines. Sure, it is a risk. Especially with your very low budget offerings from the likes of Groupon and Wowcher, but as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Your secret break will largely depend on your budget, and finding a travel agent you can trust. If you use a travel agent, instead of an online deal pusher you’re likely going to have a better experience because that agent will want you to come back to them. Online deal giants won’t give your holiday the time or attention it deserves.

It’s different:
It can be easy to fall into a travel rut. Booking the same all-inclusive resorts or familiar cities year after year. While there is nothing wrong with vacationing in places you love, there is a whole world out there. Your family favourite tried and trusted resort in Majorca could be just perfect for you, but what if the hotel just 20 minutes away is even better, and more cost effective? We rarely like to step outside of our comfort zones as creatures of habit, but the things we now love were new to us at one point.

It saves time and potentially money:
The internet is filled with so much, instantly bookable choice now days. But therein lies half the problem. There’s just simply too much choice. So while it may seem quick and instant at first, you find yourself second guessing your choices and researching for better prices, reviews, alternatives…etc. People lose on average 9 to 10 hours booking their weeklong summer vacations. And those who don’t have the time to lose, or would rather not lose it just end up going back to the same resort they went to last year. A travel agent specialising in mystery or secret destination holidays can do all that research and deciding for you, plus they have access to supplier rates and deals that you wouldn’t have.

It’s exciting:
When you decide to venture to a destination or resort/hotel you didn’t choose yourself, you’ve not only saved yourself time and potentially money, but you’ve opened yourself up to discovering new things that you never could have anticipated. You might stumble upon a local eatery that serves the best carbonara you’ve ever had. Or discover a trinket your best friend would just die for at a local market stall. These little surprises make for great stories and memories to share with friends and family when returning home. In my case, it was discovering a replica pirate ship, with a live parrot on board, voyaging passengers out to sea to whale watch. A treasured memory and experience I never would have had, had I not won a holiday to Madeira. It’s not a location I would have ever thought to choose for myself, but I loved it so much I went back again 2 years later.

It’s enriching:
Finally, booking travel to an undiscovered location offers a sense of adventure. There’s a thrill of stepping out into the unknown, taking risks, and discovering something new. In summary, booking travel to an unknown destination offers an incredibly enriching experience. It provides the chance to see the real world and break away from the tried-and-true holiday routine. It might seem daunting at first, but the rewards far outweigh any hesitation. So why not venture out into the unknown and create unforgettable memories.
