Fjallraven Saving the Planet One Backpack at a Time

3/25/2020 6:51:00 AM by My Fox Bag

Swedish outdoor brand’s Re-Kanken range made entirely from recycled plastic, save resources and reduces waste.

Founded in 1960 by Swedish outdoorsman Ake Nordin, the brand Fjallraven has spent 60 years designing and manufacturing high-quality equipment. The company started off designing aluminium-framed trekking

backpacks, before expanding the product range to include tents, jackets,
trousers and more.

But it wasn’t until 1978 that Fjallraven truly made its name among the general public, with the release of the now iconic Kanken backpack, designed to improve the postures of Swedish schoolchildren. The Kanken’s popularity grew quickly, becoming a fashionable backpack among people of all ages in Sweden and beyond, which remains the case today.

An Eco-Conscious Twist on a Design Classic

Now, in the midst of the climate crisis, Fjallraven has put a modern twist on the Classic Kanken: designing the eco-conscious ‘Re-Kanken’ range. The Re-Kanken shares the same timeless design as the Classic Kanken, but is constructed entirely from SpinDye recycled polyester – which is also recyclable – instead of Vinylon F.This means that each Re-Kanken backpack is made from no fewer than 11 recycled plastic bottles, helping to reduce landfill and ocean pollution. In addition to the material itself, SpinDye’s dyeing process radically reduces the amount of energy, water and chemicals used in production.Although the Re-Kanken’s shape and design remain faithful to the original, there is one aesthetic element that distinguishes it: the embroidered Kanken logo, in place of the circular white nylon logo.

Leading Fjallraven Stockist Championing Re-Kanken Range

Online retailer MyFoxBag.com (previously MyKankenBag.com), an official partner of Fjallraven, stocks a full Re-Kanken range, in both the standard (16-litre) and ‘Mini’ (7-litre) sizes.

“We are fully behind Fjallraven’s move towards a more environmentally-friendly product range, hence why we stock the Re-Kanken alongside the heritage Kanken line,” explained Tim Gardiner, Director at My Fox Bag. “If you are considering investing in a Kanken – which is an investment for life – we strongly encourage considering the distinctive and eco-conscious Re-Kanken, which is just as durable and full of character as the

original. Plus, in decades to come, once you’ve had your wear out of it, you can recycle it once again if you choose to.”
