Avon House Preparatory School

Avon House is an Independent Preparatory School for children aged 3-11 years. We have 3-entry points; Nursery (3 years+), Reception (4 years+) and Year 3 in our Prep Department (7 years+). Termly fees start from £3,650 with academic scholarship opportunities available from 7+.

At Avon House, we believe that a child’s character is a combination of all the values and qualities that they possess and that by providing pupils with a range of opportunities and experiences, both within and outside of the classroom, we will then provide a platform for all of our pupils to flourish. Through our Character Education initiative, we are committed to helping our children have the emotional literacy and confidence to be able answer how they are feeling on a daily basis. For once we know how our pupils are feeling, we can tailor our teaching approach to create an environment that encourages working and learning for all.

Conveniently located on Woodford Green High Road, our grounds have been cleverly developed to make the most of the space with the school’s buildings, both old and new, telling a story of over a 100 years’ of education. A recent partnership with The Woodford Wells Club also provides us with unique access to extensive sporting facilities and every pupil receives a Junior Membership to the sports club included within their school fees.

Our staff possess a wealth of educational experience which blends well together in class teaching as well as allowing for specialisms to be used across the whole age range for all pupils to benefit. Spanish is taught from 3 years+, with Spanish and French taught in our Prep department. Music is also a key element for us with 2/3rds of the pupils in Years 1-6 currently learning at least one instrument. We have 8 visiting music teachers each week who offer private lessons, a number of school choirs, LAMDA public speaking, dance and drama opportunities.

We are a competitive school in all aspects of school life, whether competing in National Quiz Club competitions, National Maths Challenges, Independent School Art competitions both locally and across the country, sports of every discipline that appear in the primary curriculum, singing in London venues or in our own Inter House competitions. We have been National netball finalists, ISA London North champions at mixed tag rugby, finalists at science, maths and general knowledge quiz club competitions and have individuals who are competing nationally in karate and in swimming events.

We are the 2nd Independent School in the country to receive Gold status as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. Mirroring our school ethos, our pupils are encouraged to use the “Rights of the Child” to express not only how we should all act around others but also how we can support children in the broader community.

We appreciate that choosing a school is a hard decision with a range of mixed emotions. We believe that choosing a school is very much like choosing a house. It has to feel like home.
