Frequently Asked Questions about DHL Express Service Point (Instant Solution Property & Insure)

DHL is unable to deliver to PO Boxes in the UK. A full street address is required. PO Boxes may be acceptable for some international addresses, but please check with DHL Express Customer Service before you send.
This doesn't happen often, but it may occur if your parcel contains a prohibited item, or you haven't printed the parcel paperwork. Please contact our DHL Express Customer Service team for advice about your situation. If we are unable to arrange another collection for you, we will issue a refund.
We do offer a same day collection service when you book a courier collection online or by phone, but this depends on the time you make your booking and the time the courier is in your area. We recommend that you book as early as possible to get the best chances of collection on the same day. If this isn't possible, you can book a collection for the next working day or up to five days ahead. Please note that collections are made during business hours, Monday to Friday only (excluding bank holidays).
You or a representative must be present when the courier arrives to collect the parcel you are sending. For security reasons, we’re unable to collect parcels that are left in 'safe places'. If you have arranged for a parcel to be collected from your office and you leave the parcel at reception, you must ensure that someone is there to hand it over to the DHL Express courier.
All packages require a barcoded label generated by DHL. Without a label, your package will not get to its destination and the courier will therefore be unable to accept your package. If you are unable to print parcel labels, please do not use DHL Express online (DHLitNow) or DHL by Phone to make your booking. If you don’t have access to a printer, please use a DHL Express Service Point where staff will print the label for your parcel in store. You’ll find a full list of our DHL Service Points under Our Services tab on our website. Use the Website tab on our Google Business Profile to get to our site.
DHL Express is committed to delivering your parcels with speed and care. However, parcels should be packed to withstand the normal rigours of road and aircraft handling and transportation. Packing your parcels with proper materials and care help ensure your shipments arrive safely and intact. To help ensure your parcel arrives in the same condition that you sent it, you should: Assess what you’re trying to send – consider the weight, cost, regulations and fragility of the contents. Choose your packaging based on its material, strength and size. Pack your goods correctly, leaving no empty space in the box, placing items in the centre of the box and wrapping items individually. Seal your parcel correctly using the right tape and ensuring all the seams are sealed. Display your labels clearly and include a spare label inside the package. Please note that DHL accepts no liability for the packaging advice it provides. The customer remains responsible for ensuring packaging is adequate for transportation. When using any one of our DHL Express Service Points, select from free packaging sizes according to your needs. For box sizes and shipping price guide click on the Website button on our Google Business Profile and on our website, under Our Services select DHL Service Point in the drop-down menu for the Size & Price Guide.
We can accept parcels in your own packaging when booking a courier collection online or by phone, and also at selected DHL Service Points for drop off. We can accept parcels in your own packaging when using DHL Service Points located in DHL Express Service Centres where we have the capability to measure and weigh your parcel. The rest of the drop off locations that are part of our DHL Service Point network do not have the capability to measure and weigh your parcel. Therefore, if you want to use your own packaging and a drop off delivery option, you have to go to a DHL Express Service Centre. Find a link to a list of these stores on our website under Our Services then DHL Service Points drop-down menu. Then click on Find Your Nearest DHL Service Point and look for the DHL Service Centre link in the copy. You can also book a courier collection online for your custom-sized package with DHL Express (DHLitNow). Just go to our website by following the Website link on our Google Business Profile, on our website go to Get A Quote and follow the instructions. Or book a courier collection by contacting the phone number on our Google business listing. Our opening hours are 07:30–20:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00–14:00 on Saturday. Calls to DHL UK phone numbers beginning ‘084’ cost 7 pence per minute, plus your phone company’s access charge. Also have a look at our answer to the question What Are The Parcel Size And Weight Limits? if this is applicable to you.
Yes, you can. If you have a parcel weighing more than 70kg or with dimensions over 120 x 80 x 80cm, please contact our Customer Service team for a quote. The number is listed under Phone on our Google Business Profile.
When you send a parcel online with DHL Express (DHLitNow) or DHL by Phone, you must calculate the dimensions of your parcel at home. The dimensions of a parcel are always length (L) x height (H) x width (W). We will need accurate measurements to calculate the cost of sending your parcel. The length (L) of the parcel will always be the longest side of the parcel you are sending, and the width and height are the other two measurements of the parcel. If your parcel is large but light in weight, the delivery price may be calculated by the parcel's volumetric weight rather than its actual weight. To calculate the volumetric weight, multiply length (L) x height (H) x width (W) and divide the result by 5000. The final answer will be in weight (kg). Parcel weight is rounded up to the nearest half kilo. The greater of the two weights (actual weight vs volumetric weight) will then be used for the parcel delivery cost. For an irregularly shaped parcel, it can be difficult to work out what dimensions you need to give when using a DHL service to send a parcel. When calculating these dimensions, always measure the largest or furthest protruding parts of the item. The length is the longest part of the parcel, and the width and height should be measured between the parcel’s widest points.
Our parcel size and weight limits depend on the service you choose. With DHL Express Service Point Drop Off: To send a parcel from a DHL Service Point, your items must fit into one of our free DHL envelopes or boxes. Our largest box size is 48 x 40 x 39cm, with a maximum recommended weight of 25kg. Find out more in our size and price guide on our website under Our Services then DHL Service Point drop-down menu and select Size & Price Guide. With DHL Express Online (DHLitNow) or DHL by Phone: If you choose to book a collection online with DHL Express (DHLitNow) or DHL by phone, the maximum weight per parcel is 70kg and the maximum dimensions per parcel are 120 x 80 x 80cm. See our weight and size comparison guide for more information: Click the Website button on our Google Business Profile and on our website go to Help & Advice where you'll find Measuring & Weighing Advice in the drop-down menu. If you need to send a larger or heavier parcel, we will be happy to quote for parcels up to 300kg with a maximum length of 300cm. Use the phone number listed on our Google Business Profile.
It's important to be as accurate as possible when weighing and measuring your parcel. If this information is not accurate it could result in extra charges, or your parcel being returned. We recommend that you use kitchen or bathroom scales to weigh your parcel and a tape measure or ruler to measure the dimensions. If your parcel does not fit onto the scale, subtract your weight from the weight of you holding the parcel to get the parcel weight. Please specify the weight in kilograms (kg) and dimensions in centimetres (cm). If you need help converting from imperial to metric, please use an online conversion calculator. For more information on weighing and measuring advice, click on the Website tab on our Google Business Profile, on our website click on Help & Advice and Measuring & Weighing Advice in the drop-down menu. Note that we automatically reweigh and remeasure parcels at our Service Centres before they are despatched.

If you are expecting or have received a delivery in the UK, you can pay your Duty and VAT charges quickly and securely online. If you have received an SMS or email message in respect of Duty and VAT charges for an import pending delivery, please follow the link in your message to make a payment online or go to On Demand Delivery. If you have received an invoice, you can pay your Duty and VAT charges quickly and securely online using our ePayments service. Click on the Website button on our Google Business Profile. On the home page scroll down to the Pay Duty and Vat button where you'll find both On Demand Delivery and ePayment options under How do I pay duties and taxes?
Duties and taxes are charged by Customs in the destination country and the receiver is responsible for paying them. To make it simpler, DHL will pay the charges on the receiver's behalf and collect payment from the receiver either before or on delivery. Generally, we are unable to deliver parcels until these have been paid. DHL Express does offer the opportunity for DHL account holders to pay duties and taxes on behalf of the receiver. In that case, after shipment delivery, DHL invoices customers for the duties and taxes we paid on their behalf at the destination, plus a small administration fee. This optional service is called Duties and Taxes Paid (DTP).
The Customs authorities in the destination country determine whether any duties and taxes are applicable when the parcel arrives. This is based on the information provided on the parcel label (or waybill) and Customs paperwork, such as the contents, declared value and weight.
When transporting goods across international borders, packages are subject to duties and taxes as determined by Customs in the destination country. When sending parcels internationally, it’s important to understand what duties and taxes are. Whether a shipment is a gift or not, it must still go through an import procedure as determined by Customs law in the destination country. The shipment is cleared through Customs based on the origin country, value and quantity. The calculation of duties depends on the assessable value of a dutiable shipment. For the purpose of this calculation, dutiable goods are given a classification code that is known as the Harmonised System code. This system has been assigned by the World Customs Organization and continues to evolve.

Protecting our world and the environment is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. That’s why we carbon offset every parcel sent when dropping off at DHL Service Point, or when booking a collection online via DHL Express (DHLitNow). Currently, we don't offer carbon-neutral delivery and carbon offset when booking a collection with us over the phone. This means that we fund climate protection projects across the world to compensate for the carbon emissions produced by delivering your parcel. DHL has a climate projection goal of being carbon neutral by 2050 and has set out milestones along the way, such as reducing emissions by 50% compared to 2007 levels by 2025.
For carbon-neutral delivery and carbon offsetting choose to make your booking online via DHL Express (DHLitNow) or drop your parcel off at a DHL Service Point near you. Currently, we don't offer carbon-neutral delivery and carbon offset when booking a collection with us over the phone. When sending a parcel, there are a few additional things you can do to help reduce carbon emissions. The packaging you use can make a big difference – almost a third of all plastic produced is for packaging and only 14% will be recycled, according to a report by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation. If you're sending a parcel by dropping off at a DHL Service Point, you can use our free recyclable packaging that comes in various sizes. Or, if you're making a booking online with DHL Express (DHLitNow) where you use your own packaging, we recommend using a biodegradable and recyclable option. Choose packaging to match the size of your items so that you don't need much if any, parcel filler (such as packing peanuts). Most packaging filler is instantly thrown away into landfill, so where possible minimise its use and make sure you use a biodegradable option. To explore what you could do to have a more sustainable lifestyle read our blog post titled Six Steps Towards a More Sustainable Lifestyle. To guide you there, click on our Website tab on our Google Business Profile. On our website click on Help & Advice then Blog on the drop-down menu.
DHL funds a variety of climate protection and carbon-reducing projects. Not only do we offset emissions but, together with our customers, we contribute to promoting the economy in developing countries while improving the living standard of local people. These projects include: Landfill project in Chile Borehole rehabilitation in Eritrea Wind power project in India Biogas programme in Vietnam Hydropower in Laos Renewable energy bundled project in Brazil Water filtration and improved cookstoves in Guatemala Do you have any other questions about how you can ship more sustainably? Feel free to get in touch with our DHL Express team.
Shipment Insurance for non-document shipments The charge for Shipment Insurance is £12.00 for parcels valued up to £800. If the total value of the parcel is greater than £800, then the insurance for the item is 1.5% of the total item value. For example, if the value of your shipment is £2,000, the insurance charge will be £30.00. Extended Liability for documents For parcels containing documents only, we offer Extended Liability. If you are sending valuable documents such as passports, visa applications or regulatory certificates you can extend DHL's standard liability with this service. For a fixed charge of £3.00, Extended Liability provides a fixed compensation amount of £300 to cover the costs of recovery in the unlikely event of loss or damage.

We always endeavour to collect your parcel on the agreed date and time, but occasionally circumstances outside our control can affect collection times. This could be due to adverse traffic or weather conditions, for example.
If for any reason there was a problem with the label you printed, the courier may have issued you with a new label (also known as a waybill). If this is the case, you will need to track your parcel using the waybill number provided by the courier, and not the tracking number confirmed to you via email.
